What do you guys run? I will be putting mine on 15" rims, and probably doing 185-195 width. I'm in Calgary AB, should I get studs? Is Costco my best bet for good pricing?

Bridgestone Blizzaks with studs yes - good to go. Try Tire Rack online....

The bloody cooper all season all terrains on my mercury mountianeer that have very little tread left, I have no room in my budget for new tires. I'll be living on the edge at least until next year. Hopefully I won't roll..

For now I'm running Continental ExtremeContact DWS in 205 width. They're not winter tires (they're all seasons) but they've pretty good reviews for winter driving and are probably perfectly fine for where I live (Central VA).
I'll probably (possibly) be buying a set of steelies soon and running either Blizzaks or Continental ExtremeWinterContacts

Blizzak WS70 on dedicated rims. 215/50R16 for winter vs 225/45R17 for summer. Need that gummier sidewall to keep from getting wheel cracks and sidewall blisters on all the potholes.

Would you say the Blizzak WS80 are better than the Michelin X-Ice3's?

Haven't tried the michelin, though I know michelin in general was having some QA problems last time I bought tires about a year ago (those dern french and their quality)

Canadian Tire's Goodyear Nordic (with no studs) for the price are hard to beat. I had 3 sets over the years and they have served their purpose well.
They were way better than the Michelin Arctic's I had on my Challenger.
I always bought them when it was buy 3 get one free.

Costco only really has the option of Blizzak WS80's or Michelin X-Ice3's, it'll be one of those.

Michelin Alpine pa3 on the M, probably going to go with blizzaks on the saabaru. Go on craigslist, (or kiiji or w/e it is), and buy a used set with wheels and tires that barely have any wear on them for a few hundred dollars. Mine are both studless but I live in central Il and most people just run a/s here.

I run Dunlop WinterSport 3D's on my STI. My brother-in-law runs studs on his car and says that they are great. I have no problems without studs on mine, so I would say studs/no studs is a tossup. I can't remember what tires he has, but they are on a VW Jetta TDI.

The Xi3's have a discount, so they are within $20, the blizzaks are newer though, and should be better I would hope.

I run Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3, these tires are awesome, except on the wet like all other winter tires, but they are not the worse, not at all. I have them on a (don't laugh) fwd Fiat Panda II, the car has an incredible grip with these tires. You don't need studs, except on ice.

The Blizzaks I got are the exact same size as the stock potenzas.
I already bought 16in Sparco wheels with Dunlop ZIIs for the summer. The stock rims are the winter rims.

I'm planning on just selling my stock rims whenever I need new tires for them, and picking up 16's then.

The only reason I'm keeping the stock rims is because to stay in stock class in RallyX, you have to have the stock wheel diameter.

Brian Silvestro

10/27/2014 at 14:52 | 0 |
No, in AutoX, you have to be within 1 inch of the stock wheels.
(Hence why I got 16s and not 15s for the summer)

Well they're smaller, so they're lighter.
I don't know much about them, I bought them used from another ST owner. He went to 15s.

For years I've run Firestone Winterforce snows and been very happy with them. They last quite awhile and while handling suffers, they're very durable and great in snow.
I ran studs on my old hatchback for a couple winters and I don't think you really need them unless you are driving on hard packed/snow or ice all the time. Like, if you live at the end of a couple mile dirt road or something they would make sense, but if you are in an urban sort of area, driving on pavement, that's cleared within 4-8 hours or the snowfall, they will actually kind of suck because you lose grip on dry surfaces.

Blizzak WS60s on the stock wheels, they do the job very well. I got mine at Mavis Discount Tire, which is an absolutely horrible God-forsaken hellhole of a place that I will never be going back to, but isn't an option in Alberta anyway.

I went with Boto BS66 tires in 215 60 16 today for mine. Ended up with a great price because I had an older set of walmart tires on steelies that I sold the car they belonged on that I traded in on.
If I had lots of cash I probably would have gone with Continental Extreme WinterContact, with second going to Hankook Optimo 4S. One of those is what my girlfriend will probably end up.
I wouldn't bother with studs. I don't think they're worth it. They only really make a difference on ice and hard packed snow I would think. I also think they're not great for plowed roads.
